A thoughtful selection with the person's interest and life-style in mind can bring back the good old days of Christmas.

Bring back the good old days for Christmas this year.

It is becoming more and more difficult to surprise anyone for the holidays. Advertising has bombarded them first with what is currently "in" and what they should be wanting; their list of wishes is now more than a mile long. Perhaps resurrecting some of the special gifts we, as boomers, received for the holidays can once again bring giggles and joy. Where to look for these treasures? You don’t have to look far and it doesn’t have to break the bank.

Yard sales

The US population is on the move and with that there is a cleaning out of unused or unwanted items. A fun way to hunt for items is to look at family yard sales. Many of these sales include children’s clothing as well as toys and games. Gently used train sets, Legos, erector sets, Lincoln logs, Barbie dolls, books, yo-yos, metal or wooden cars and trucks can be found for the children; old fashioned dishes, glassware, unusual paintings, period furniture can be found for the adults on your list. Yard sales are usually held Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. It's best to get there early for the best selection. Find where to go in the local paper, or on corner signs in the neighborhood.

Antique stores

There’s nothing like wondering through an antique store to bring back memories of the past. One can almost visualize the jars of candy on the Rexall Drugstore counter, or smell the fragrant cookies from grandma’s kitchen. The usual comment is “I had that growing up,” or “my mother had one of these.” Older children may appreciate an old rotary phone, or perhaps a smaller oak school desk for their room. Those into music may enjoy old phonographs with old LPs and 45s. Kitchen staples such as cookie cutters, mixing bowls, and classic toasters fill the shelves; these can accent a cook's workplace.

Estate Sales

Estate sales sell items of those who have deceased, sometimes entire household goods as well as personal items. You need to be aware that you may experience an odd feeling walking through a house that is no longer occupied. If this is not a problem for you, there may be interesting items with fascinating stories. There will most likely be jewelry that could become a conversation piece. Furniture from previous generations can easily create an accent piece in your home.

On-line auctions

The internet is alive and well with on-line auctions. EBay.com, webstore.com, eBid.com, and online auction.com are convenient ways to shop for unusual gifts from the privacy of your own home. If you can think of it, it is most likely available.

Arts and crafts fairs

Don’t underestimate the unique gift ideas that are personally crafted. There’s always something new that can be found which may establish a new tradition.

Gift giving should be a personal connection with another person. A thoughtful selection with the person’s interest and life-style in mind can bring back the good old days of Christmas.
