The little bit of extra time it takes to compose and write a letter can produce an amazing impact on relationships.

Daily visits to the mailbox usually yield nothing but bills, advertising flyers, and subscription magazines. Finding a handwritten envelope with a personal letter inside brings a smile to our face and the urgency to see what is inside. What a nice surprise. Handwritten notes have seemingly gone out of style with the convenience of e-mails on the internet, but let’s examine some of the positive aspects of this ancient tradition.

Personal

Let’s face it; if someone goes to all of the trouble of finding a nice piece of stationary and sits down to compose a letter to write their thoughts, they have spent extra time and effort to do so. What does it say? It says that you are special to that person and they value your relationship. Look at the feeling you get when you receive an e-mail? Would you feel the same if you received a birthday e-mail or a birthday card? It’s all about feeling. It’s about personal communication.

The Loop

You might have heard the philosophy of “writing the last letter.” When you receive a letter, you return that letter with a thank you, writing the last letter. It makes for good correspondence. The best letter is one that is a total surprise, with no specific purpose or holiday in mind except to let the person know that you are thinking of them.

Motivation

As strange as it may seem, writing personal notes can have a significant impact on motivating and inspiring individuals in their lives, especially if it is coupled with verbal accolades.

Expressions worthy of a personal note:

  • Appreciation for something given to you, whether the gift of time or present
  • Enjoyment of time spent together
  • Accomplishment
  • Memorable experience
  • Forgotten event, such as a birthday, anniversary, graduation

Supplies

Writing material can be found in many places, from office supply houses such as Office Max, discount stores such as Target, or often at the local dollar store. It doesn’t have to be fancy; remember, it is the thought that counts and the feeling that comes with the thought. Add stickers or stamps to further the message. Just have fun with it.

Begin young

It is very important that our children learn this skill when they are young. Teach them by setting an example. When you receive a gift, send a note. Show them that this is how to express gratitude for someone taking the time and energy to send a gift.

The power of a personal handwritten letter or note cannot be overemphasized. The little bit of extra time it takes to compose and write a letter can produce an amazing impact on relationships.
